Learn Spanish - Helpful Hints for Learning Quickly

by Kurt Michael

Many people have anxiety about learning a new language, but it does not have to be hard. The truth is, you can have a great time learning a new language! Focus on the opportunities that speaking another language can bring. Consider how much more comfortable you'll feel if you do any traveling. You might even have an easier time communicating with people in your own city. You are also required to know another language for many jobs today. The language that is used the most in the United States, next to English, is Spanish.

There is probably no better way to become fluent in a new language than to go somewhere that forces you to speak it constantly. There would be no faster way to get fluent in Spanish, for example, than to spend time in a Spanish-speaking nation. There are, of course, certain places in the U.S. where you could use this immersion method right at home. Usually what this means, however, is traveling to another country so that you are not able to simply switch back to your own language when it is convenient. The effectiveness of immersion is hard to deny, and some people say it's the only really good way to learn another language. Other people find it intimidating. You will have to decide for yourself.

You understand and be understood better if you take the time to learn local dialects. More importantly, a tutor can tell you about the casual uses of the words you will be learning. A book or CD will normally teach the formal usage of language. Yet a tutor can teach you to talk in slang words.

Work on improving your "ear" for the language. A lot of languages tend to be more 'oral' than written. In fact, as long as the language is still "alive" you will have to learn how to hear the language. Knowing how to correctly write a sentence or the alphabet will produce limited results. You'll still have to understand it when you hear it spoken. The best approach is to listen to the language as much as you can. If, after hearing just a few spoken words of Spanish you know what language it is, you're on the sure path to learning success.

Try reviewing your vocabulary by using flashcards. This is a simple but effective way to reinforce your knowledge. Teachers in so many different areas still use them because they have proven helpful over the years. Test yourself or have someone else test you in areas like grammar and using verbs in a variety of tenses. You can use flashcards almost anywhere you go, as they are portable. It make it more fun if someone else helps you with them. The process is extremely simple -on one side of the card, write the word in your own language; on the other side, the same word in Spanish.

Study the language with the intent of making the whole process as simple as possible. Keep in mind that Spanish is much easier to learn than many other languages. There are so many different language courses, programs and systems available today. Pick the system that appeals to you most. It becomes much easier to learn when you find a teacher, course or system that really appeals to you. Just take a step by step approach to learning Spanish and one day you will find that you are speaking and understanding it fluently!
