If a student has had a specific challenge in their personal life, such as the death of a parent or parents, that student will have a higher probability of receiving the aid because of their hardship. The reasoning for this is that this particular applicant will have a greater need for assistance. Some other type of handicap a student has been able to overcome will also get the attention of the program. All students, however, regardless of their background, need full information on scholarship to make the best choices.

Two very strong characteristics a student should have are leadership within one's school and community service. It takes time and effort to do all that is required for good grades in school and adding community service to that shows a student is willing to make that extra effort.

Academic achievement will help tip the balance for many students. Those with good grades show not only intelligence, but also a willingness to learn and the drive to further improve their education. Higher grades also show a student has the ability to learn. All applicants will be asked to provide a written statement or essay to the scholarship program to explain to the issuing program why they are the best candidate for the scholarship.

A student needs to understand the significance of researching for a scholarship early on. It will take some time to conduct the extensive searching needed to find the right type of scholarship for the individual and it will also take some time to apply for the scholarship once it is found. Looking for a scholarship the semester before one plans to start school is normally the best time to begin researching.

Students will need to make sure they are looking for the appropriate scholarship that suit the need of the individual applicant. This means looking for a scholarship that is appropriate for a student getting a certain degree or one who has a financial hardship or who needs a scholarship for other hardship, such as the loss of a parent.
