Make it a habit to develop your own ideas as you read your sources, and keep track of personal ideas by logging them in a journal. As you write, be sure you are writing in your own words and not a copy and paste of the source material. If several days pass before reading your notes again, you can be confused as to whether the information is yours or the source. You can be sure that all the information is from your own thoughts when you keep a separate journal.

It is advised that students use another journal or note cards to list direct quotes that will be used in the written report. Write the information down verbatim and always include cite information - title of source, author, and page number. As an added measure, use quotations marks to remind you that the information is a direct quote. Using note cards can be another mental trigger, denoting everything written on a 3 x 5 card is a quote and not original thoughts. Check out online colleges and get started on your career.

Many students run into plagiarism issues because they do not understand the meanings of paraphrasing and summarizing. Paraphrasing allows the student to use the foundational source without resorting to copying the material. Students review the original content and then write it out in their own words. Paraphrasing is typically shorter in content as opposed to the original passage; however it can be broader in explanation.

When you need to give an overview of an original source, you summarize your source. In other words, summarizing involves taking the main idea (or ideas) and the main points of a source and expressing them in your own words. Summaries entail the most essential components of the source you are using for your report. Like paraphrasing, summaries are usually shorter in content. Both summarizing and paraphrasing should be linked to the original source.

Develop your own writing style. Create a definitive voice throughout your writing. Make sure it is your ideas and your voice that commands the flow of your research papers and essays. When you write original works, the idea is to use the original sources as support to lend credibility, illustrate, and amplify your own thinking, which is presented in your own words.

When you incorporate the work of others in your paper, be mindful to credit your sources correctly. Observe the conventions for documentation that are provided in your college handbook and a reputable language style writing reference book. Established conventions for documenting sources vary from one academic discipline to another, so you should check with your professors for clarification on accepted and preferred versions.
