High school seniors who are months away from graduation have new Associate's degree programs from which to choose. Associate's degrees offered by community colleges particularly are often intended to help meet area employers' needs. A West Virginia community college and technical school did this when it expanded its programs, a report on WBOY 12 News noted. A community college in New Mexico in March announced that its governing board had approved Associate's degrees in English, political science, anthropology, communications, sociology and surveying engineering. An article in New Mexico Business Weekly noted also that the community college was adding new certificate programs. The certificate and Associate's degree offerings are expected to begin in the fall 2011 semester, according to New Mexico Business Weekly. In Tucson, AZ, a medical institute in March announced that it's adding a veterinary technician Associate's degree. The program is designed to train students for entry-level positions in zoos, shelters, clinics and hospitals, according to an announcement from the institute. The announcement cited U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics information showing that the demand for qualified veterinary technicians is expected to increase by 36 percent into 2018, which is considered much faster than the average for all occupations.

Associate's degrees also are a part of a new five-year MBA program in Rochester, NY. A community college in this area of upstate New York would provide students with the Associate's degrees they would need before moving on to Bachelor's and MBA degrees, according to a March article in the Democrat and Chronicle.

In Maryland, the campus newspaper for a college in February announced that the school had added an Associate's degree in law enforcement and corrections. That same institution had months earlier signed an agreement with an area university that might allow Associate's degree students a more seamless transfer to a paralegal Bachelor's degree program, according to an article on newsworks.org.

An Arizona college earlier this year announced that it was to begin offering an Associate's degree in physical therapy assisting. The Associate's degree program is expected to begin in April and includes clinical training as part of preparing participants for entry-level careers in the field, according to an article in Education Today.
